The Struggles π«
When I was asked to write a blog post about what life is like as a RDH student I was very excited. Iβd love to shed some light on being a RDH student and encourage those that are struggling. I am four weeks into my second year and it has already tested me in ways I didnβt think possible. Our clinic times have been cut down which has caused extra stress.
However, we are learning to adapt and become faster with setting up, assessments, breakdown, and writing our charts. Over the past year I have seen many students (including myself) reach a breaking point. There have been tests failed, patients that didnβt show up, and many tears that have been shed. Although the program has made all of us feel stress, anxiety, and fear we are all in this together.

The one thing about being a RDH student that isnβt talked about enough is how the program brings all the students together. We are on this journey as a cohort and must learn how to work as a team to be successful. This isnβt a program that you can do all by yourself. There will be days where you have to lean on your classmates for help, support, or for a shoulder to cry on. It is by no means a walk in the park.
No such thing as Impossible! βοΈ
I spend countless hours studying, working on projects, and I constantly find myself staring at my calendar trying to schedule patients. I believe the hardest part of the program is patient management. It is a struggle to find all the patients to meet specific requirements and to make sure they show up. The tests are hard, the days are long, and the requirements are difficult but it is ACHIEVABLE!
Let’s scale mountains π
I absolutely love being a RDH student. All the stress, anxiety, and fear is well worth the amount of personal growth! You will learn how to believe in yourself and have the courage to carry on. When you are done with this program you will not only know how to clean teeth. You will know how to scale mountains!! You got this dental babe, I believe in you!
Yours truly,
Brittany G. – Southwestern College Dental Hygiene Program National City, CA
Thank you so much Brittany! You have strong will and determination that can definitely move mountains! π
Dear dental hygiene students, the best way to finish a tedious task is to get started. βοΈ A lot of us would like to move mountains, but few of us are willing to practice on small hills. The harder you work, the more you’ll get the that RDH you all truly deserved! Have faith in yourself! π
