Q: Which pharynx is NOT visible during an intraoral examination?

(A). Oropharynx
(B). Laryngopharynx
(C). Nasopharynx

The pharynx (throat) is a muscular tube that serves as a respiratory and digestive tract. It is composed of 3 different parts:

  • The nasopharynx is located superior to the soft palate and contains the nasal cavity.
  • The oropharynx is located between the soft palate and opening of the pharynx.
  • The laryngopharynx is located below the oropharynx. During an intraoral examination, the clinician cannot see the laryngopharynx as it is located in a deeper location.

You might remember those names easily simply by understanding what the first component of each region means:

  • Naso – nose, so the nasopharynx is located behind your nose.
  • Oro – oral (mouth), so the oropharynx is located behind your mouth.
  • Laryngo – larynx (vocal box), so it is “in” the throat region.

Answer: (B). Laryngopharynx

Head and neck anatomy for the dental hygiene board exams (NBDHE, NDHCE, WREB, CDCA) is not an easy chapter at all. There are lots of details to remember such as the blood vessels, nerves, or anatomical positions. The textbook we use a lot in dental hygiene schools is very comprehensive (and amazing) but honestly it is a lot of information to memorize. StudentRDH dental hygiene board exam courses for the NBDHE or NDHCE has bite-sized topics that can help you absorb the important information with a little more ease. Did you know there is a FREE trial available? See if StudentRDH Dental Hygiene Board Exam review course for the Nationals works for you. If it doesn’t, at least it was FREE. We will just try to make it better! Email me at ClaireJ@StudentRDH.com for any questions regarding the NBDHE or NDHCE because I took both!

If you are taking the dental hygiene boards, download the 4-page study planner. 100% FREE and useful.
