There are 22 bones in the skull (8 cranial bones and 14 facial bones), excluding the middle ear ossicles.

8 cranial bones:

  • occipital bone
  • 2 temporal bones
  • 2 parietal bones
  • sphenoid bone
  • ethmoid bone
  • frontal bone

14 facial bones:

  • vomer
  • 2 conchae
  • 2 nasal bones
  • 2 maxillae (some sources count the maxilla as one bone)
  • mandible
  • 2 palatine bones
  • 2 zygomatic bones
  • 2 lacrimal bones

Answer: (D). Zygomatic

Since zygomatic bone is our answer, let’s review a little more about this bone for the dental hygiene board exams (NBDHE, NDHCE). The zygomatic bone, also called cheekbone or malar bone, is located below and lateral to the orbit (eye socket), at the widest part of the cheek. It joins the frontal bone at the outer edge of the orbit and the sphenoid and maxilla within the orbit. It forms the central part of the zygomatic arch by its attachments to the maxilla in front and to the zygomatic process of the temporal bone at the side. On a panoramic radiograph, the zygomatic arch will appear as radiopaque curved structures on both sides of the face above the maxillary molars.

And just to add to this, the middle ear contains three tiny bones known as the ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes). Hope you see a question related to this zygomatic bone in the dental hygiene board exams (NBDHE, NDHCE)! Email me anytime at clairej@studentRDH.com!
