The maxillary central incisors in this image feature an unusual indentation which is characteristic of congenital syphilis. Those malformed incisors are called “screwdriver-shaped” incisors. Besides abnormal incisors, congenital syphilis can also form mulberry molars (molars with tiny globules instead of cusps).
- Erosion describes tooth destruction from chemical influences (e.g., acid from purging, beverage, food). Affected teeth lose the enamel and become yellow (from dentin).
- Attrition describes tooth destruction from forces between the teeth (e.g., grinding). Affected teeth have flat occlusal or incisal surface.
- Fluorosis is caused by the over consumption of fluoride during tooth development. Affected teeth can appear mottled, pitted, and/or discolored.
