From DA to DH 😍

My name is Amberlee Nolet (@hygienistjourney on Instagram), I am twenty-two years old and a recent graduate of the Durham College Dental Hygiene program in Oshawa Ontario, Canada. 😍

In 2019, I also graduated from the Dental Assisting program at Durham College. All throughout my dental hygiene program, I worked part-time as a dental assistant which I absolutely loved and will miss dearly as a hygienist. πŸ™‚

For everyone who is questioning the dental path, I strongly recommend starting with dental assisting. It provides you with basic knowledge and experience that really helps you in your dental hygiene journey (it also may allow you to drop some courses which is a bonus). Not to mention it allows you to see if you actually like sticking your hands in people’s mouths because it can be awkward at first. 😬

I chose dental hygiene as my career path for various reasons; job security, competitive salary, flexibility, potential benefits, and more. However, the main reason is that I have the ability to change someone’s day-to-day life and overall health. Although some individuals may be unaware, your oral health directly impacts your body’s overall health. 🧐

Hygienists have the ability to not only provide exceptional oral hygiene procedures including scaling, polishing, fluoride treatments, and more. We also work to educate the public on a day-to-day basis. As a future hygienist, I want to ensure all my patients not only receive the treatments but also the education necessary to achieve optimal oral health. πŸ™Œ

In addition to one day working in general practice, I hope to use my social media platform to educate the general public on oral health importance and inspire more future hygienists. 🦷My journey through dental school was definitely an amazing experience. However, there were many sleepless nights, long hours of studying, laughs, tears, and lots of incredible people (shout-out to my fellow DC graduates and faculty!! You guys rock).

If there is any advice I can give to a future or current student, it would be to remember how important self-care can be. Go to the gym, read a book, have a bath, take a walk, do whatever it is that makes YOU happy. πŸ₯³

This brings me to the reason I chose to write for Student RDH, I wanted to inspire everyone either going through dental school or studying for your board exam that YOU ARE SO CLOSE. πŸ€— At the end of the journey you will be able to say, β€œI did it” and boy, is that ever so rewarding. By no means is dental school easy. πŸ™ Rely on your peers, your friends, your family, #and your professors because I guarantee you that they will always have your back through some of your hardest days. Keep your head up and remember why you chose this journey.

To anyone in the process of your Dental Hygiene education, I wish you the best of luck. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or just need some words of encouragement. You got this!!! 🀟

Yours truly,

Amberlee Nolet
